Sousas Chichorros e Sousas de Arronches um enigma heraldico

The latest article by João Bernardo Galvão Teles, a partner at LMT Abreu Loureiro, Correia de Matos & Galvão Teles, reflects on the unusual nature, in Portuguese heraldry, of the existence of two guns, both constituted by a quarter, associated to the same surname Sousa – some of the Chichorro or do Prado branch, the others from that of Arronches.

Developed in co-authorship with Miguel Metelo de Seixas, this essay aims to characterize the circumstances in which the two orderings arose to try to understand their semiotic charge and its relation to the forms of construction of the lineage identity and the transmission of memory and heritage, both material and symbolic. Being the result of different determinants, the arms of these two branches named de Sousa show how the Portuguese heraldry of the 13th and 14th centuries was a mutating phenomenon, of remarkable complexity and closely associated with changes in the social structure and nobiliary culture.

This article is part of the collection Medieval Heraldry Studies, coordinated by Miguel de Metelo Seixas and Maria de Lurdes Rosa, recently published by the Institute for Medieval Studies of the Faculty of Social and Human Sciences, Universidade Nova de Lisboa. The heraldic drawings illustrating the text are by Duarte Vilardebó Loureiro.

1. Aniversario da LMT Abreu Loureiro Correia de Matos e Galvao Teles Consultores em Historia e Patrimonio

LMT Abreu Loureiro, Correia de Matos & Galvão Teles celebrates today its first year of existence! Staking on an innovative approach to historical and heritage research and consultancy, being professionally competent and focused on the client, allowed it to not only survive what, in the entrepreneurship language, is known as the valley of death - the first year of activity, which many projects do not withstand - but also achieved a very positive and diverse experience.

Amongst the work undertaken by LMT Abreu Loureiro, Correia de Matos & Galvão Teles, this includes some projects in history and heritage research, in the organization of historical document collections, in the transcription and analysis of ancient manuscripts. The acquisition of works of art or books at auctions, antique shops and used bookshops, along with the elaboration of reports on various themes and in cases of the recognition of nobility rights have also been some of the key performance areas of the consulting firm.

For Guilherme Abreu Loureiro, Lourenço Correia de Matos and João Bernardo Galvão Teles, the three partners, the decision of going ahead with this project, even at a time of crisis, has proved a good risk to take. Since it is in difficult times that new ideas must appear and because they consider that the knowledge and appreciation of our history, of our heritage and of our identity are crucial ingredients for Portugal to believe in its future.
