armas de D. Alvaro da Costa cortesao do rei D. Manuel I

«E tragam as armas dos Costas direitas em todos os lugares, e peças». O património armoriado de D. Álvaro da Costa e de sua descendência: uma estratégia de comunicação? is the title of the article by João Bernardo Galvão Teles, a partner at LMT Abreu Loureiro, Correia de Matos & Galvão Teles, co-authored with Miguel Metelo de Seixas, wrote for the collection of studies “D. Álvaro da Costa e a sua descendência, sécs. XV-XVII: poder, arte, devoção”, coordinated by the historian Maria de Lourdes Rosa and that will be presented to the public on the 30th of January.

The volume, edited by the Institute of Medieval Studies and by the Portuguese Centre for Global History (CHAM), both from the Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities (FCSH), NOVA University of Lisbon, in partnership with the Caminhos Romanos publishing house, “brings together a series of studies on the family Costa, descendants of Dom Álvaro da Costa, the dedicated steward, main ship-owner and dedicated to Dom Manuel, between the fifteenth and the seventeenth century (...)”, with a preface written by Luís Adão da Fonseca.

The text by João Bernardo Galvão Teles and Miguel Metelo de Seixas, which seeks to uncover how the heraldry may have been placed so as to build the identity and memory of Dom Álvaro da Costa’s family, results from the talk they both presented at the International Colloquium dedicated to the same theme of this now published collection, held on the 7th and 8th of June 2011 at the Torre do Tombo in Lisbon and at the Évora Museum.

The public release of the work will take place on the 30th of January, at 6:30pm, at the São Roque Museum, of the Santa Casa da Misericórdia de Lisboa, an organization that also supported this publication.
